Pet Aquatic Turtles

Hello everyone, my name is Melissa and welcome to my turtle blog! Here, I’m going to teach you the basics of aquatic turtle care. Above and/or to the right, you will find some tabs with special "turtle" subjects of interest to choose from, so please feel free to browse my pages.   

I’ll also be offering some “warnings” on choosing the right turtle breed as your pet. In short, smaller breeds make the best pets, and there are only a few of them out there... Most others will get fairly large as adults (the size of a dinner plate!), so it is important to know which breed is best for you.  

And even some other information to help you decide whether or not getting a turtle is really the right decision for you. You may feel certain you want a turtle right now. Or maybe a kid in your life  wants one sooooo badly? Especially with the Ninja Turtle movie coming out, many people will be rushing to find a pet turtle for their child.   

But children quickly lose interest in things. In a few weeks, their new obsession could be a different toy, or video game. So its best not to get a pet that will need decades of care, based on a child's temporary excited whim.   

While wonderful, beautiful and fascinating-- turtles are NOT easy or cheap pets to keep. They are somewhat high maintenance, prone to a variety of health problems (vet bills can get expensive) and they do require lots of equipment for proper care.  

Turtles can live for several decades (25 to 50 years for some), if properly cared for. So it is a life-long commitment to get one. But sadly, most pet turtles are captured or bought by people who have no idea how to properly care for them. So they only live a few months, or less than a year.   

My goal is to help educate everyone to give these amazing creatures a better life, and to help keep everyone informed. That being said, please browse on to learn more!
